TRAVEL AND MEDICAL INSURANCE POLICY
Rationale:
Tawa Intermediate has developed a medical and travel insurance policy to ensure;
-
the safety, well-being of the International Students studying at Tawa Intermediate.
-
that the school is protected in the event of an emergency.
-
compliance with the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016.
Insurance Requirements
1. All students are required to have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance for the duration of their planned study, as specified in the Code.
2. The school/International Student Manager shall advise all prospective students of the requirements for medical and travel insurance.
3. Students purchasing insurance should purchase insurance cover at the time of fee payment and before they leave their home country to cover departure date from home country until arrival date back into home country.
4. Where insurance is provided from a New Zealand company, policy details should be provided in the student’s first language where possible.
5. In the case of overseas policy providers, students must provide the school with the policy details in English, before the student arrives in New Zealand.
Verification of Policies
6. Verification of policies will be undertaken prior to enrolment by the International Student Manager.
7. As part of the verification process, the International Student Manager at Tawa Intermediate shall ensure that:
a) The insurer/re-insure is a reputable and established company with substantial experience in the Travel Insurance business, and has a credit rating no lower than A from Standard and Poors, or B+ from A M Best.
b) The Insurer is able to provide emergency 24-hour, 7 day per week cover.
c) Students have a “certificate of currency” and policy wording from the Insurance Company stating that the student has purchased the cover for the duration of the planned period of study. The certificate and policy working must also detail high sums insured and medical benefits, emergency evacuation/repatriation, accompanying relative cover, personal effects, personal liability cover etc.
8. A copy of the Medical and Travel Insurance Policy in English is required before a student can start their study at Tawa Intermediate.
9. The International Student Manager at Tawa Intermediate will check the terms of the insurance policy to ensure that it is comprehensive enough. The policy should;
a) commence from the minute the student leaves home for the airport on their way to New Zealand until their arrival back in their home country.

b) have high sums insured

c) include medical benefits

d) cover emergency evacuation/repatriation back to their home country
​
e) cover accompanying relative cover in the event a student in New Zealand becomes seriously ill or dies

f) cover students’ personal effects
​
g) include personal liability cover
​
h) any likely activities the student will undertake while in New Zealand are covered. This includes any outdoor programmes or activities outside the classroom on offer at Tawa Intermediate.
10. Where a student is not in possession of an appropriate and current medical and travel insurance policy the International Student Manager at the school will:
a) Advise the student of the medical and travel insurance requirement.
b) Provide the student with a default policy or policy choice that meets the requirements of the Code.
11. The cost of default insurance will be met by the student.
Recording of Policy Details
12. For each student the International Student Manager at Tawa Intermediate shall record the:
a) Name of the insurer

b) Policy number

c) Policy start and end dates.
Policy Renewals
13. For each student, prior to the expiry of their medical and travel insurance policy, the International Student Manager at Tawa Intermediate shall issue a written reminder to the student advising that policy renewal must be completed.
