VISAS & INSURANCE

VISAS

In accordance with the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016, Tawa Intermediate School requires that all long term (studying for one term or more) International Students live with their parent/s or a legal guardian.

All students are required to have a current student visa to be enrolled at Tawa Intermediate School. For more information about visa and permit requirements, visit the New Zealand Immigration website.

INSURANCE

International students are not eligible for publicly funded health services while in New Zealand, except in cases where a student may meet eligibility criteria in another category. If they do not meet the eligibility criteria for one of those categories and receive medical treatment during their visit, they will be liable for the full costs of that treatment.  Detailed information about eligibility for publicly funded health services in New Zealand is available on the Ministry of Health website .

MEDICAL & TRAVEL INSURANCE

International students must have comprehensive medical and travel insurance for the duration of their time studying in New Zealand, as documented in the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016. There are a number of New Zealand based companies that can assist with appropriate policies, including Uni-Care.

ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Everyone in New Zealand is covered by the Accident Compensation Corporation's (ACC) no-fault scheme if they’re injured in an accident. This includes children, beneficiaries and students. It doesn’t matter if they’re working, unemployed or retired. It also includes visitors to New Zealand.

The cover ACC provides helps pay for the costs of your recovery and may include payment towards treatment, help at home and work, and income support. However, you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. More information is available on the ACC website.

THE CODE

5

The Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 sets out the minimum standards of advice and care expected of New Zealand education providers to ensure the wellbeing of their international students.

Education providers must be approved signatories to the Code to enrol international students.

The Code specifies ten outcomes which signatories must meet, as well as minimum processes required to achieve each outcome.

By focusing on outcomes, the Code sets out what must be achieved rather than prescribing how to achieve it. Signatories are regarded as the trusted experts who have the flexibility to tailor policies and processes to meet the needs of their international learners.

Tawa Intermediate School is an approved signatory to the Code.
